Introduction
The Street Combat classes use the Self Defence Federation (SDF) Combat Ju-Jitsu system as its base and grading syllabus. This system was devised by Dave Turton, 8th Dan Black Belt and head of the SDF. The description below is taken from Dave's introduction in the syllabus:
"Because there is simply no one single
art, system or style of martial arts that covers EVERY aspect of
realistic self defence, the SDF and Dave Turton used methods from many
sources. Because there are no sporting applications to the SDF system,
there are no restrictions in its training methods. All the SDF Self
Defence methods are geared totally towards modern 21st century Street
Self Defence and Self Protection ideals. The emphasis is on developing each individual to their own personal
abilities, based on age, sex, pysical condition etc. Fitness although
an asset is in fact not a pre-requisite to good self defence"
Training (What's included):
The classes start with warm up drills to get everyone ready for training. The class will then work on different aspects of combat which can include:- Punching, kicking and other striking techniques (To develop powerful and effective strikes)
- Joint locks and control techniques
- Throws and takedowns (effective ways to get an attacker to the floor)
- Grappling techniques (Gaining control of an attacker either standing up or on the ground)
- Weapons Defences (To understand common street weapons and how to defend against them)
- Sparring (Controlled sparring to develop distance appreciation, speed and timing)
- Understanding Awareness, Avoidance and Escape mothods
- Understanding the Use of Force and the Law
Safety:
Clearly for street combat to work, the techniques used need to be effective and capable of causing pain or damage to an attacker in a real situation if necessary. However, during classes the methods are practiced in a way that they can be learnt and understood safely.Personal Development:
The SDF Syllabus is a belt system from beginner to black belt that allows students to develop and improve at their own pace as and when they are ready. Beginner and intermediate grades will be tested by Ian Harrison. Black belt grades from 1st Dan and above will be tested by Dave Turton.Within the classes students will regularly work with different training partners which helps their development by allowing them to practice tehniques on different people.
