Introduction:

Modern Street Combat is the training and grading syllabus of the Self Defence Federation (SDF). This system was devised by Dave Turton, 9th Dan Black Belt and head of the SDF. The description below is taken from Dave's introduction in the syllabus:

"Because there is simply no one single art, system or style of martial arts that covers EVERY aspect of realistic self defence, the SDF and Dave Turton used methods from many sources. Because there are no sporting applications to the SDF system, there are no restrictions in its training methods. All the SDF Self Defence methods are geared totally towards modern 21st century Street Self Defence and Self Protection ideals. The emphasis is on developing each individual to their own personal abilities, based on age, sex, physical condition etc. Fitness, although an asset is in fact not a pre-requisite to good self defence."

Training:

The classes start with warm up drills to get everyone ready for training. Each class will then focus on different aspects of combat which can include:

- Punching, kicking and other striking techniques
- Joint locks and control techniques
- Throws,  takedowns and effective ways to get an attacker to the floor
- Grappling techniques - Standing and on the floor
- Weapons work - Understanding the use of, and defence against weapons
- Sparring - This helps develop distance appreciation, timing, balance, speed and timing
- Awareness, avoidance and escape methods
- Understand the use of force and the law for self defence

Safety:

Clearly for street combat techniques to work, they need to be effective and capable of causing pain or damage to an attacker in a real situation if necessary. However, during training the methods are practiced in a way that they can be learnt and understood safely. The sessions do of course involve physical contact, but students work at a level they are comfortable with based on experience etc.

Personal Development:

The SDF Modern Street Combat syllabus is a belt system from beginner to black belt and beyond. It allows students to develop and improve at their own pace as and when they are ready. There is a lot of freedom on the syllabus so anyone coming to the SDF with previous martial arts experience will find it adds to what they already know and allows use of existing knowledge.

Students grading at beginner and intermediate levels are tested by Ian Harrison. Black Belt grades are tested by Dave Turton.
